The North Coast (Sampalan, Sental & Toyapakeh)

• The Vibe: Convenient, vibrant, and connected.

  
  

• Best For: First-time visitors, divers, and travelers who like having cafes, shops, spas and restaurants nearby.

• Why Stay Here: The north coast is home to the main boat harbors (Toyapakeh and Sampalan), making arrival and departure completely seamless. It’s also where you'll find the highest concentration of beachfront cafes, local warungs, and dive centers like, Purple Dive Penida. Sental, is in the middle at equal distance between the two harbours, and perhaps one of the best places to stay, it remains quiet for the north coast but still very close to the hustle and bustle. Within walking distance you can find high end coktails and tapas or street food anf the reef is incredible and of easy acces from the tiny beaches scattered along the coast. The West + South Coasts (Crystal Bay & Kelingking Area)

• The Vibe: Wild, scenic, and sunset-focused.

  
  

• Best For: Couples, nature lovers, and photo enthusiasts.

• Why Stay Here: The west side is home to Penida's most famous postcard landmarks, including Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, and Angel’s Billabong. Staying on this side of the island allows you to hit these spots before the crowds arrive. The sunsets from the western cliffs are stunning.

  
  

The East Coast (Atuh & Diamond Beach)

• The Vibe: Remote, quiet, and untouched.

• Best For: Early risers, adventurous soul-seekers, and quiet escapes.

• Why Stay Here: The east coast offers spectacular sunrises over Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach. It’s much quieter than the west side, giving you a taste of rural island life. However, keep in mind that dining options are more spread out here, and getting to the harbors takes a bit longer.

You can choose where you stay based on what priorities you have and how mobile you are ( willing to drive 20 minutes to find a bar or prefer to walk 5 minutes), what you plan to do ( tour in air con car or exploring on a scooter; scuba diving or tanning...). Be aware that a large portion of the island does not have direct sea access ( basically all of the south coast is cliffs) and currents can be very dangerous in places (it is forbidden to swim in Atuh and Diamond beach).
